A Collector's Item from the Voyager missions to the outer solar system! Own a piece of human space exploration history--the messages that we sent aboard the twin Voyager spacecraft to a future spacefaring race who may someday encounter these interplanetary messengers from Earth.
Assembled by renowned scientists Carl Sagan and Frank Drake, the Voyager record represents a "capsule" of Earth biology, science, and culture. Only a limited number of these Commemorative Edition book-and-CD sets were produced!
This Commemorative Edition of Murmurs of Earth is in its original box, shrink-wrapped, and has never been opened.
The Commemorative Edition contains:
- Murmurs of Earth: The Voyager Interstellar Record, by Carl Sagan, with F. D. Drake, Ann Druyan, Timothy Ferris, Jon Lomberg, and Linda Salzman Sagan. This 275-page book contains several essays by renowned planetary scientists, writers, and historians; reproductions of all of the images included on the Voyager record with captions (over a hundred images); annotated lists of all of the music and audio tracks; and several appendices with information about and images from the Voyager mission.
- Voyager Gallery: a 16-page booklet containing a timeline of the Voyager mission and beautiful color Voyager images of the outer planets and moons.
- Murmurs of Earth: The Voyager Interstellar Record, a 2-CD set containing the entire data (116 color images) and audio contents (90 minutes) of the Voyager record. NOTE: please see the "System Requirements" section below for comments on system compatibility!
System Requirements (CD-ROMs):
There are two CDs in the box. One CD is all audio, and the other has one data track followed by a number of audio tracks. The audio portions of both CDs will run on any computer or CD player that is capable of reading and playing audio CDs. The audio portion includes: recorded greetings in 55 languages; greetings from the UN; whale greetings; sounds from animals and nature; and 28 different world music recordings.
The data portion of one of the two CDs--which consists of the 116 images stored on the Voyager record, all of which are also reproduced in the companion book, may not run on newer computer systems (the set was produced in 1992). The stated and observed system requirements are:
PC: Stated requirements: "IBM 286 compatible (requires Super VGA card for 640x480, 256 Colors; Multisync monitor; PC-compatible CD-ROM drive; 640K available memory)." We have tested the CD, and it will run under Windows 98, but will not run under Windows XP or 2000. I could not test Win 95 or NT. The data section works on windows Xp by right clicking on the file going to properties and setting compatibility to Win 95 or 98. The data section also works on a Windows 95 pc.
Mac: Stated requirements: "Macintosh II series or LC (requires 12- or 13-inch color monitor; System 6.0.5 or greater; Macintosh-compatible CD-ROM drive; 2MB available memory)." I have tested the CD, and the application will not run directly from the CD, but will run under System 8 or 9 if you copy the CD contents to your desktop and adjust the memory allocation to the viewing application. (I'll be happy top provide step-by-step instructions to any interested user.) I could not test System 10.
Again, the only portion that is problematic is the data portion of one CD, and this data is also reproduced in the companion book.
